What changed for this spec
Patch 12.1 rebuilds Balance around its Astral Power economy. The developer note says Astral Power generation and the number of free spenders were both cut while the damage of each spender was increased, with the stated intent of providing more time to react to Astral Power gain and making pooling Astral Power outside Eclipse to spend inside Eclipse more impactful. Matching that, Touch the Cosmos and Orbit Breaker were reduced while damage rose across the board: Starsurge up 71%, Starfire up 20%, Wrath up 10%, on top of an 8% all-damage increase. Umbral Intensity now boosts Wrath and Starfire by 12% at all times, Stellar Amplification applies to only one target, Sculpt the Stars and Astral Communion swapped tree positions, and a new level 42 passive, Stellar Protection, applies Stellar Flare if Moonfire and Sunfire are dispelled.

Not re-verified for Season 2. This ordering was checked for patch 12.0.7. Patch 12.1 raised max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and deliberately moved power out of cooldowns into steady-state damage, either of which can move secondary weights. Open question: no Season 2 sim source has been checked, so the order below is last season's and is shown unchanged rather than guessed at.
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Intellect
- 2.Haste
- 3.Mastery
- 4.Critical Strike
- 5.Versatility
Item level and Intellect come first. Haste increases Astral Power flow and DoT ticks, which feeds every spender. Mastery scales the Eclipse you are in, so its value depends on keeping Eclipse uptime high. Critical Strike and Versatility trail behind. Weights shift with tier and talents - sim your own character before locking in gems and enchants.
Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.
Priority order is from patch 12.0.7 and has not been re-derived for 12.1. Individual lines naming an ability that 12.1 removed or redesigned are annotated above; lines that 12.1 only retuned are unchanged, because a damage number moving does not by itself reorder a priority list.
Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Eclipse usage: Eclipse is a 32-second cooldown that enters Solar or Lunar Eclipse depending on your previously cast builder - Wrath primes Solar, Starfire primes Lunar. Maximize time inside Eclipse and overlap it with short cooldowns like Force of Nature (Keeper of the Grove) or Fury of Elune (Elune's Chosen).
- Spread DoTs: Moonfire and Sunfire are a substantial damage gain on as many targets as possible, because DoT ticks feed Shooting Stars.
- Always be casting: Starsurge and Starfall are instant, so build Astral Power while you can stand still and spend it whenever you are forced to move.
Keeper of the GroveThe preferred raid tree. Two builds exist: Incarnation: Chosen of Elune with Starweaver, or Convoke the Spirits with Rattle the Stars - the list below follows the Starweaver/Incarnation build.
Single-target priority
- 1.Moonfire - apply and refresh within pandemic
- 2.Sunfire - apply and refresh within pandemic, or if your next cast is Force of Nature
- 3.Fury of Elune - on the GCD before Force of Nature - but don't hold either cooldown if it costs you a use
- 4.Solar Eclipse - enter it if you are sitting on 2 charges of the cooldown
- 5.Force of Nature - if you are not in an Eclipse and your next cast is Solar Eclipse or Incarnation: Chosen of Elune
- 6.Incarnation: Chosen of Elune - if you just used Force of Nature
- 7.Solar Eclipse - enter with enough resources to spend all Ascendant Eclipses stacks in your next 4 GCDs
- 8.Starfire - when you have Ascendant Fires up at the start of Incarnation: Chosen of Elune
- 9.Starfall - to consume Starweaver's Warp and Touch the Cosmos
- 10.Starsurge - main spender - if you need to move, are about to cap Astral Power, or to spend Starweaver's Weft procs
- 11.Wrath - to generate Astral Power
AoE priority
- 1.Moonfire - spread while targets are being gathered
- 2.Sunfire - apply when all targets are gathered
- 3.Force of Nature - if you are not in an Eclipse and your next cast is Eclipse or Incarnation: Chosen of Elune
- 4.Incarnation: Chosen of Elune - if you just used Force of Nature
- 5.Lunar Eclipse - enter on 3+ targets with enough resources to spend all Ascendant Eclipses stacks in your next 4 GCDs
- 6.Starsurge - to consume Starweaver's Weft - on low target counts it is optimal to target-swap for Stellar Amplification
- 7.Starfall - to consume Starweaver's Warp
- 8.Starfire - at the start of Incarnation: Chosen of Elune to consume Ascendant Fires
- 9.Starfall - to prevent capping Astral Power, or to consume Ascendant Eclipses at the start of Eclipse
- 10.Wrath - outside of Eclipse up to and including 4 targets
- 11.Starfire / Wrath - Starfire in Lunar Eclipse, Wrath in Solar Eclipse
Elune's ChosenThe Mythic+ recommendation, and currently simming better than Keeper of the Grove on pure single target. Lunar Calling locks you out of Solar Eclipse, and the AoE goal is reducing Fury of Elune's cooldown through Lunation - so uptime on every cast matters.
Single-target priority
- 1.Moonfire - apply and refresh within pandemic
- 2.Sunfire - apply and refresh within pandemic
- 3.Lunar Eclipse - press if you are sitting on 2 charges
- 4.Incarnation: Chosen of Elune - if you can use it without Lunar Eclipse reaching 2 charges during the window
- 5.Fury of Elune - off cooldown, or hold slightly to line up with Lunar Eclipse or Incarnation
- 6.Lunar Eclipse - enter with enough resources to spend all Ascendant Eclipses stacks in your next 4 GCDs
- 7.Starsurge - to consume Touch the Cosmos
- 8.Starsurge - to prevent capping Astral Power, or to consume Ascendant Eclipses at the start of Lunar Eclipse
- 9.Starfire - to generate Astral Power inside Lunar Eclipse
- 10.Wrath - outside of any active Eclipse
AoE priority
- 1.Moonfire - spread to as many targets as possible
- 2.Sunfire - apply when all targets are gathered
- 3.Lunar Eclipse - enter if you are sitting on 2 charges
- 4.Fury of Elune - off cooldown, or hold slightly to line up with Lunar Eclipse or Incarnation
- 5.Incarnation: Chosen of Elune - if you can use it without Lunar Eclipse reaching 2 charges during the window
- 6.Lunar Eclipse - enter on 3+ targets with enough resources to spend all Ascendant Eclipses stacks in your next 4 GCDs
- 7.Starsurge - to consume Starweaver's Weft
- 8.Starfall - to consume Starweaver's Warp or Touch the Cosmos
- 9.Starfall - on 2+ targets to prevent capping Astral Power, or to consume Ascendant Eclipses at the start of Eclipse
- 10.Starfire - to generate Astral Power
Pre-combat checks
- Use your raid buff: apply Mark of the Wild before the pull.
- Innervate your healer - agree with your healer or raid leader in advance on who gets it.
- Consumables: Flask of the Shattered Sun and Intellect food, a weapon oil like Thalassian Phoenix Oil, plus a Healthstone and Silvermoon Health Potion.
Major cooldowns
Celestial Alignment / Incarnation: Chosen of Elune
- Celestial Alignment grants both Eclipse effects, increasing the damage of everything you do. Incarnation: Chosen of Elune is the improved version with longer duration and bonus Critical Strike.
- Your rotation does not change during it - just spend as much Astral Power as possible inside the window.
- Midnight's Shooting Stars and Starweaver interactions lean into a flat damage profile, which favors taking Incarnation for the duration and crit.
- You can hold a charge at any time to line up with a mechanic, as long as you are not sitting on 2 charges.
Control of the Dream planning
- Control of the Dream lets you hold Force of Nature, Celestial Alignment / Incarnation, and Convoke the Spirits for up to 15 seconds while refunding cooldown for the time held.
- Use that slack to pair cooldowns with Eclipse windows and boss timers instead of pressing them the moment they light up.
Advanced tips
Treating Eclipse as a cooldown
- The core question is whether you can align Eclipse with Force of Nature. Press cooldowns together whenever applicable - but Eclipse and Celestial Alignment/Incarnation are virtually the same cooldown and overwrite each other, so plan to avoid losing uses.
- Apply standard damage-cooldown rules to Eclipse: press it with as much resource banked as possible, avoid overcapping its charges, and pair it with your other cooldowns.
- Entering any Eclipse, or pressing Celestial Alignment/Incarnation, resets your current Solstice to 6 seconds regardless of its previous duration.
Import strings were built for patch 12.0.7 and have NOT been re-verified for 12.1. Nobody authoritative publishes import strings, so none was rewritten here rather than invented. Patch 12.1 moved or removed talents in several trees, so a string may import a build that no longer exists. Check the listed key talents against the 12.1 changes above before importing.
Talents and hero trees
Use Elune's Chosen for the single-target profile below and Keeper of the Grove when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.
Recommended starting profiles
Single-target: Elune's Chosen
Elune's Chosen amplifies Astral and Lunar burst for the strongest single-target and priority damage.
- Elune's Chosen hero tree
- Stat priority: Intellect > Haste
- Interrupt: Solar Beam
Multi-target: Keeper of the Grove
Elune's Chosen is the Mythic+ recommendation - Lunation feeds Fury of Elune in AoE. Keeper of the Grove is the raid pick, with Force of Nature as a core rotational cooldown.
- Keeper of the Grove hero tree
- Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
- Interrupt: Solar Beam
Talent builds
Start with the profile matching your content. Boss and dungeon tabs in the gear section show the exact loadout used for each ranked result. A build with no import string has not had one exported for this patch; the key talents below are the build.
Raid - Elune's Chosen Single Target
Default boss build. Keep Moonfire and Sunfire rolling, hold Eclipse uptime with disciplined filler casts, and pool Astral Power ahead of Celestial Alignment so the window opens with back-to-back Starsurge spends. Fury of Elune and New Moon layer inside the same window.
Mythic+ - Keeper of the Grove AoE
Default key build. Keeper of the Grove leans on Force of Nature and Grove's Inspiration for sustained pack damage while Orbital Strike and Meteor Storm cover burst on pull. Spend on Starfall at three or more targets and keep Sunfire spread across the pack.
Alternative - Incarnation Burst
Swap Celestial Alignment for Incarnation: Chosen of Elune when the fight rewards fewer, larger burst windows that you can line up with add spawns or damage amplification phases. Convoke the Spirits inside the window for maximum value.
Arena - Control & Pressure (3v3)
Built around DoT pressure and layered control. Crescent Burn rewards refreshing Moonfire, Moon and Stars protects your Eclipse entries from locks, and Celestial Guardian plus Bear Form covers trains. Faerie Swarm, Cyclone, and Mighty Bash give you swap-enabling control. Adjust PvP talents to the enemy comp.

datamined. Read out of the game's spell data and republished by Wowhead. Blizzard does not publish set bonus text, so there is no first-party version to compare it against.- 2-piece
- Starsurge damage increased by 20%. Starfall also deals (30.4% of Spell Power) Astral damage instantly to all valid enemies in range when cast.
- 4-piece
- Your damage is increased by 10% while in any Eclipse. This bonus wanes to 2% at the midpoint of the Eclipse, then waxes back to 10% at the end.

Editorial acquisition targets
Use these slot targets when planning drops and crafted pieces. The encounter explorer above remains the source for the exact gear worn by each ranked player.
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The rows below name Season 1 items at their Season 1 item levels and are accurate as that; they are not Season 2 recommendations. Season 2's raid is The Venomous Abyss (8 bosses, Nek'zali the Soulcoiler through Ula'tek). Confirmed Season 2 raid item levels run 279 (Raid Finder, first boss) to 344 (Mythic, last two bosses and Very Rare drops), with Normal 292-302, Heroic 305-315 and the Great Vault paying 292/305/318/334 by difficulty. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.

Season 2 runs Altar of Fangs (new in 12.1), Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Temple of Sethraliss, Kings' Rest and Ruby Life Pools. Confirmed Season 2 keystone item levels: +2 through +3 pay 295 end-of-run and 305 in the vault, rising to 311 end-of-run and 318 in the vault at +10 and above. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.

Enchants
Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.
Gems
Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.
Embellishments
Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.
Utility, defensives, and movement
Your Druid toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.
Rebirth is a combat battle rez and Stampeding Roar is a group movement speed burst.

FAQ
5 quick answersWhat is the best Balance Druid stat priority in Midnight Season 1?
Intellect and item level first, then Haste, Mastery, Critical Strike, and Versatility. Haste feeds Astral Power generation and DoT ticks; Mastery scales the Eclipse you are in, so its value tracks your Eclipse uptime. Sim your character before committing to gems and enchants.
Which hero tree should Balance Druid play?
Elune's Chosen for single-target and pure boss fights; Keeper of the Grove for multi-target, cleave, and Mythic+. Check the per-boss recommendation before a raid night - mixed encounters like Crown of the Cosmos can justify either tree depending on your assignment.
When do I use Starfall instead of Starsurge?
Starfall at three or more targets that will live through most of its duration; Starsurge everywhere else. On two targets with full Moonfire and Sunfire uptime, Starsurge usually stays ahead unless the adds are stacked and long-lived.
How should I use Solar Beam in Mythic+?
Solar Beam is an area silence, not just a single-target interrupt. Drop it on stacked casters to shut down an entire pack's school, and coordinate with your group so their single-target kicks cover the casts your beam does not. Do not waste it on a lone caster another player can kick.
What defensives does Balance Druid have?
Barkskin is your rotational damage reduction, Renewal is an instant self-heal, and Bear Form is the emergency button when you are the target of something lethal - shift, survive, then shift back and re-enter your Eclipse. Plan Barkskin for known raid events instead of holding it.
