Druid · Guardian
Guardian is a Rage-based bear tank. Your baseline plan is simple: build Rage with Mangle, Thrash, Moonfire procs, and incoming damage, spend it before capping, and choose the right spender for the damage pattern. Ironfur is your physical mitigation button, Frenzied Regeneration is your recovery button, and Raze/Maul is your damage spender when you are already safe.

How Guardian Druid wins

- Role
- Tank
- Stat lead
- Agility then Haste
- Single target
- Elune's Chosen
- Cleave / AoE
- Elune's Chosen
Strong when
- Very forgiving physical mitigation through stacked Ironfur
- Strong self-healing and absorb conversion through Frenzied Regeneration talents
- Excellent AoE threat with Thrash, Moonfire, Raze, and Incarnation
- Druid utility: Mark of the Wild, Rebirth, Stampeding Roar, Soothe, roots, and off-healing
Plan around
- Magic damage requires real cooldown planning instead of just Ironfur
- Rage-starved gaps feel bad if Mangle and Thrash are delayed
- Can look indestructible in small pulls and then fall over if big pulls start without Rage
- Less unique raid utility when another Druid already covers Mark of the Wild
What changed for this spec
Patch 12.1 reworks how Guardian spends Rage. Gory Fur is redesigned: Ironfur can make your next Maul, Raze, or Ravage free, and those spenders can make your next Ironfur free. Wild Guardian, the Apex talent, is redesigned into a three-rank spirit that awakens on Rage spending, resets Thrash and Mangle, and generates Rage. Blizzard says both changes are meant to incentivize more balance between Rage spenders and distribute the Apex talent's impact across a longer duration and a broader portion of the kit. Lunation now reduces Lunar Beam's cooldown by a flat 20 seconds instead of 3 seconds per Arcane ability, which the notes say resolves its adverse rotational pressure. All damage is up 8%, with absorb and healing retunes alongside the class-wide 25% health increase.

Not re-verified for Season 2. This ordering was checked for patch 12.0.7. Patch 12.1 raised max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and deliberately moved power out of cooldowns into steady-state damage, either of which can move secondary weights. Open question: no Season 2 sim source has been checked, so the order below is last season's and is shown unchanged rather than guessed at.
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Agility
- 2.Haste
- 3.Versatility
- 4.Mastery
- 5.Critical Strike
Item level and Agility are the first check. Haste smooths Rage generation and global flow, Versatility reduces all incoming damage, Mastery adds maximum health and armor value, and Critical Strike is mostly an offensive/avoidance stat. Defensive weights change by encounter damage profile.
Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.
Priority order is from patch 12.0.7 and has not been re-derived for 12.1. Individual lines naming an ability that 12.1 removed or redesigned are annotated above; lines that 12.1 only retuned are unchanged, because a damage number moving does not by itself reorder a priority list.
Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Avoid Rage waste: Rage should be spent intentionally - unnecessary over-use of Ironfur is a huge DPS loss.
- Keep abilities on cooldown: casting Mangle and Thrash as often as possible keeps the rotation flowing smoothly.
- Rotate defensive cooldowns: having a defensive up at the right moment makes a world of difference as a tank.
- The core loop is pressing a couple of short-cooldown buttons frequently (Thrash and Mangle), then spending Rage offensively (Maul/Raze) or defensively (Ironfur).
Druid of the ClawGuardian's priority is one of the simplest in the game and is the same list in single target and AoE - no real debuffs or procs to track beyond Moonfire, Thrash stacks, and Galactic Guardian.
Single-target priority
- 1.Moonfire - maintain on your primary target
- 2.Thrash - maintain 3-5 stacks
- 3.Red Moon - on cooldown
- 4.Mangle - on cooldown
- 5.Thrash - on cooldown
- 6.Maul or Ironfur - spend Rage offensively (Maul) or defensively (Ironfur)
- 7.Frenzied Regeneration - if your health dips low
- 8.Moonfire - with Galactic Guardian procs
- 9.Barkskin / Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc - use your cooldowns as frequently as possible
- 10.Swipe - if you have nothing else to press
AoE priority
- 1.Moonfire - maintain on your primary target
- 2.Thrash - maintain 3-5 stacks
- 3.Mangle - on cooldown
- 4.Thrash - on cooldown
- 5.Maul or Ironfur - spend Rage offensively (Maul) or defensively (Ironfur)
- 6.Frenzied Regeneration - if your health dips low
- 7.Moonfire - with Galactic Guardian procs
- 8.Barkskin / Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc - use your cooldowns as frequently as possible
- 9.Swipe - if you have nothing else to press
Opener
- 1.Get Moonfire and Thrash rolling immediately - the opener is the priority list in motion.
- 2.Cast Red Moon on cooldown.
- 3.Cast Mangle on cooldown.
- 4.Cast Thrash on cooldown, building to 3-5 stacks.
- 5.Spend Rage on Maul (offensively) or Ironfur (defensively).
- 6.Use Barkskin or Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc early, then continue the regular rotation.
Elune's ChosenThe published priority is identical to Druid of the Claw - the trees change your passives and cooldown flavor (Lunar Beam, Astral value), not the button order.

Pre-combat checks
- Buff Mark of the Wild.
- Consume food, flask, and weapon oil.
- Be in Bear Form before the pull. This applies to raids, dungeons, delves, and open-world content alike.
Major cooldowns
Berserk / Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc
- While the buff is active, fit in as many Thrash and Mangle casts as possible and spend Rage on Maul, Raze, or Ironfur to avoid capping.
- Guardian's cooldowns have varied durations and timers: when you know the encounter, time or hold them to pair with each other - but only if you will not lose uses. If in doubt, use them as they become available.
Advanced tips
Spending Rage
- Rage spending is the focal point of both survival and damage.
- Pressing Ironfur when you do not actually need it defensively is now a significant DPS loss: the goal is to stay above 80 Rage for each Maul cast because of Harnessed Rage, and Ironfur drains that cycle.
- Over-Ironfuring leaves you filling GCDs with Swipe, which generates no Rage and deals very little damage - the more you Swipe, the less efficient your DPS.
- But skipping Ironfur into a large physical hit or a heavy flow of melee swings can easily kill you. Finding the balance between the two is the spec's real skill check.
Import strings were built for patch 12.0.7 and have NOT been re-verified for 12.1. Nobody authoritative publishes import strings, so none was rewritten here rather than invented. Patch 12.1 moved or removed talents in several trees, so a string may import a build that no longer exists. Check the listed key talents against the 12.1 changes above before importing.
Talents and hero trees
Use Elune's Chosen for the single-target profile below and Elune's Chosen when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.
Recommended starting profiles
Single-target: Elune's Chosen
Elune's Chosen is the recommended default for most raid bosses because the current tier rewards steady cleave, Astral damage, and a smoother defensive profile. Druid of the Claw is still a burstier single-target option when the encounter is truly one target.
- Elune's Chosen hero tree
- Stat priority: Agility > Haste
- Interrupt: Skull Bash
Multi-target: Elune's Chosen
Elune's Chosen is the default Mythic+ and AoE tree. It gives flexible damage, strong Moonfire/Astral value, and a simpler profile than Druid of the Claw on large pulls.
- Elune's Chosen hero tree
- Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
- Interrupt: Skull Bash
Talent builds and import strings
Start with the profile matching your content. Boss and dungeon tabs in the gear section show the exact loadout used for each ranked result. A build with no import string has not had one exported for this patch; the key talents below are the build.
Raid - Elune's Chosen Default
Recommended raid setup for most Midnight Season 1 bosses. It keeps the defensive profile smooth, rewards Moonfire/Astral uptime, and still handles the cleave that appears on most encounters.
CgGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgZmxs4BGjZ2MLzMMLLDMbwoJamZWmZmZGjZMDAAAAAYGLzAW2mZwY2GATAAAAbYmBYxMYALWMAzMAGMythic+ - Elune's Chosen AoE
Default key build. It prioritizes flexible AoE threat, Moonfire value, and simple defensive planning over a narrow burst-only damage profile.
CgGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgZmZmFzMjZWMLm5BmZZZgZzMGNRmZWmZmZmlxMAAAAAAYmFzAbbzMYMLDgJAAAgNMzDMgFDMwsYZDwMDAAlternative - Druid of the Claw Burst
Use this when you specifically want a burstier single-target profile and are comfortable giving up the simpler Elune's Chosen cleave package.

- Thrash has a 20% chance to make your next Mangle deal 100% increased damage.
- 4-piece
- Thrash calls up 3 thorns, each impaling a target for (54% of Attack Power) Nature damage and dealing (27% of Attack Power) additional Nature damage to up to 5 nearby enemies, and extends the duration of [Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc / Berserk] by 0.5 sec, up to 5.0 sec.

Editorial acquisition targets
Use these slot targets when planning drops and crafted pieces. The encounter explorer above remains the source for the exact gear worn by each ranked player.
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The rows below name Season 1 items at their Season 1 item levels and are accurate as that; they are not Season 2 recommendations. Season 2's raid is The Venomous Abyss (8 bosses, Nek'zali the Soulcoiler through Ula'tek). Confirmed Season 2 raid item levels run 279 (Raid Finder, first boss) to 344 (Mythic, last two bosses and Very Rare drops), with Normal 292-302, Heroic 305-315 and the Great Vault paying 292/305/318/334 by difficulty. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.

Season 2 runs Altar of Fangs (new in 12.1), Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Temple of Sethraliss, Kings' Rest and Ruby Life Pools. Confirmed Season 2 keystone item levels: +2 through +3 pay 295 end-of-run and 305 in the vault, rising to 311 end-of-run and 318 in the vault at +10 and above. Enchants
Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.
Gems
Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.
Embellishments
Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.
Utility, defensives, and movement
Your Druid toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.
Rebirth is a combat battle rez and Stampeding Roar is a group movement speed burst.

Patch 12.1 increased max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and made crowd-control diminishing returns reset after 20 seconds instead of 16, so defensive timing and crowd-control advice on this page is the most likely to have moved. What improves results
- Think in Rage budgets: first buy enough Ironfur to live, then buy damage with Raze/Maul.
- Ironfur is armor. It is excellent into physical boss swings and melee packs, but it does not fix magic bursts by itself.
- Use Frenzied Regeneration after damage has landed or when you know the next hit will not kill you before the heal ticks.
- A clean pull starts before contact: Moonfire while moving, Thrash as enemies connect, Mangle for Rage, Ironfur before the first melee round.
- Do not sit on Barkskin. Its value comes from how many times you press it across a dungeon or boss, not from saving it for the perfect disaster.
- In Mythic+, plan who stops what before the pull. Guardian has Skull Bash, Incapacitating Roar, Typhoon, Ursol's Vortex, roots, and Soothe - use the whole kit.
- If ranged enemies will not move, line-of-sight them or Moonfire them while your group stacks; do not drag the melee pack out of ground effects chasing one caster.
- Bear Form before crowd control or a tank swap. Being in caster/cat form when the boss reconnects is one of the easiest ways to die.
Common mistakes
- Capping Rage while Ironfur is missing or Raze/Maul is available
- Spending every bit of Rage on damage and having nothing for the next physical spike
- Pressing Frenzied Regeneration at full health without a reason
- Using Survival Instincts and Barkskin together on medium damage, then having neither for the real hit
- Ignoring Moonfire procs and losing threat on ranged adds
- Treating Swipe like a priority button; it is filler, not the core of the rotation

Grip setups, anti-caster pressure, and sustained melee uptime.
Mobility, anti-slow, and physical or magic mitigation.
Keep an answer for grip-based isolation and do not spend movement before the Death Knight commits their control chain.
