What changed for this spec
Benediction's trigger moved: Apotheosis no longer upgrades Flash Heal, and Holy Word: Serenity now has a 100% chance to do it, which Blizzard says is meant to spread Benediction's availability beyond Apotheosis and Prayer of Mending; it also costs 30% less mana and heals 15% more. Divine Hymn now grants Guardian Spirit while channeled, adding 5 seconds if Guardian Spirit is already active on you and removing whatever time remains of that addition if the channel ends early, described as making it easier to use. Sustain improved as well: all healing up 16%, Flash Heal and Prayer of Healing mana costs down 10%, and Apotheosis reducing Holy Word mana costs by 70% (was 50%). Archon's Resonant Energy was redesigned - creating a Halo now gives 2% healing for 10 seconds, stacking 4 times.
3 things on this page name abilities the patch changed
These are flagged, not corrected. Rewriting a priority list needs a source this page does not have, so what is shown is where the guide and the patch notes disagree.
- Divine Hymn (rotation) The notes say "Divine Hymn has been updated - Now additionally grants Guardian Spirit while channeled", with the developer note adding that it extends an active Guardian Spirit by 5 seconds and removes the remaining added time if the channel ends early.
- Divine Hymn (talents) The notes say "Divine Hymn has been updated - Now additionally grants Guardian Spirit while channeled", so the talent's described function no longer matches the guide entry.
- Benediction (talents) The notes say "Apex Talent: Benediction (Rank 3) has been updated - Apotheosis no longer upgrades Flash Heal to Benediction. Holy Word: Serenity now has a 100% chance to upgrade your next Flash Heal to Benediction."

Not re-verified for Season 2. This ordering was checked for patch 12.0.7. Patch 12.1 raised max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and deliberately moved power out of cooldowns into steady-state damage, either of which can move secondary weights. Open question: no Season 2 sim source has been checked, so the order below is last season's and is shown unchanged rather than guessed at.
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Item Level / Intellect
- 2.Raid: Critical Strike
- 3.Raid: Mastery
- 4.Mythic+: Haste
- 5.Mythic+: Versatility / Critical Strike
Raid starts Critical Strike > Mastery > Versatility > Haste. Mythic+ starts Haste > Versatility = Critical Strike > Mastery to support damage, survivability, and faster reactions. Mastery is excellent when its Echo of Light does not overheal, but its value falls in movement-heavy keys. Reassess close upgrades against your content and current gear.
Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.
Priority order is from patch 12.0.7 and has not been re-derived for 12.1. Individual lines naming an ability that 12.1 removed or redesigned are annotated above; lines that 12.1 only retuned are unchanged, because a damage number moving does not by itself reorder a priority list.
Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Keep Holy Words on cooldown: Holy Word: Serenity and Holy Word: Sanctify are your most powerful abilities. You can pool them for predictable damage - especially single-target - but never sit on 2 stacks if you can help it.
- Raid healing with AoE or single target: Holy has competitive builds for both, and its triage and spot-healing is at a premium in progression raiding where most healers focus on even AoE healing.
- Mythic+ healing is flexible: Ultimate Serenity lets you keep Prayer of Healing for AoE while gaining extra Holy Word: Serenity casts that also cleave onto your party.
ArchonThe preferred playstyle: pair Apotheosis and Halo, entering with one Serenity and one Sanctify charge banked. The first list is the raid priority; the second is the Mythic+ priority. Oracle differences are covered in the advanced tips.
Single-target priority
- 1.Holy Word: Serenity - raid priority - cast on cooldown for single-target healing
- 2.Surge of Light procs - consume on Prayer of Healing whenever possible; you can hold up to two stacks
- 3.Prayer of Mending - keep on cooldown
- 4.Flash Heal - to spot-heal as needed
- 5.Smite - during downtime, to farm Surge of Light procs for extra cooldown reduction
- 6.Divine Hymn - for raid-wide damage
AoE priority
- 1.Halo - Mythic+ priority - cast frequently for healing and damage, ideally before incoming damage; the Surge of Light procs it generates heal for more than regular casts
- 2.Holy Word: Serenity - on cooldown for single target
- 3.Prayer of Mending - keep on cooldown - focus on refreshing and maintaining stacks on players
- 4.Apotheosis - use frequently to save mana, reset your Holy Words before burst damage, or simply as a damage cooldown in downtime
- 5.Flash Heal - to build Lightweaver stacks for more powerful Prayer of Healing casts
Major cooldowns
Divine Hymn
- Your primary raid cooldown. It can be cast while out of line of sight of your allies - useful when LoSing dangerous dungeon mobs.
- It does bonus healing in dungeons, making it a powerful Mythic+ cooldown as well.
Apotheosis
- Grants faster Holy Word cooldown reduction and makes them cheaper - every global during Apotheosis should cast a Holy Word or reduce one.
- In Mythic+, use it frequently: to save mana, to reset Holy Words before burst damage, or simply as a damage cooldown during downtime.
Guardian Spirit
- Your main tank external and a cheat death: it returns the target to 40% health on lethal damage, with a cap on how much it can absorb.
- Especially valuable on tanks with strong self-healing like Blood Death Knights - communicate when you plan to use it.
- Priest is weak defensively, so self-casting Guardian Spirit is legitimate when the tanks are not using the cooldown.
Defensives
- Desperate Prayer and Fade are your primary defensives.
- Protective Light gives you 10% damage reduction just by casting Flash Heal - and with Binding Heals, a Flash Heal on any ally still activates it on yourself.
Advanced tips
Archon gameplay
- Halo lasts longer, heals for more, and increases the healing allies receive for 10 seconds after it heals them - use it early as raid damage starts landing.
- Pool Holy Words to benefit from that increased healing, but never enough to cap stacks or let a player sit low.
- Pairing Halo with Apotheosis is a must for the bonus healing both receive - it produces huge, sustained, focused output for the duration.
Playing Oracle instead
- Oracle uses its extra Prayer of Mending charge for better sustained and passive healing.
- The extra charge lets you pool Prayer of Mending casts for upcoming movement, or spend them on efficient spot-healing through Prompt Prognosis.
Prayer of Mending management in Midnight
- Piety is now passive, redirecting your overheal to other injured allies.
- Unfolding Vision keeps Prayer of Mending stacks active instead of fully expiring - especially helpful in Mythic+.
- Prayer of Mending stacks to 14 and a normal cast applies 7: refresh onto an ally with existing stacks whenever you will not overcap past 14, or when the duration is about to fall off and the waste is 2 stacks or fewer.
Mythic+ notes
- Holy conserves mana well while producing excellent burst with Archon.
- Its dungeon weakness is defensives, so high Versatility matters for high-end keys.
- Holding Holy Words for incoming boss mechanics can be very productive, and Holy's short cooldowns should be woven in frequently for damage, healing, or mana efficiency.
Import strings were built for patch 12.0.7 and have NOT been re-verified for 12.1. Nobody authoritative publishes import strings, so none was rewritten here rather than invented. Patch 12.1 moved or removed talents in several trees, so a string may import a build that no longer exists. Check the listed key talents against the 12.1 changes above before importing.

Editorial acquisition targets
Use these slot targets when planning drops and crafted pieces. The encounter explorer above remains the source for the exact gear worn by each ranked player.
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The rows below name Season 1 items at their Season 1 item levels and are accurate as that; they are not Season 2 recommendations. Season 2's raid is The Venomous Abyss (8 bosses, Nek'zali the Soulcoiler through Ula'tek). Confirmed Season 2 raid item levels run 279 (Raid Finder, first boss) to 344 (Mythic, last two bosses and Very Rare drops), with Normal 292-302, Heroic 305-315 and the Great Vault paying 292/305/318/334 by difficulty. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.
Raid acquisition targets
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The dungeons named below are the Season 1 pool and are not in Season 2 rotation. Season 2 runs Altar of Fangs (new in 12.1), Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Temple of Sethraliss, Kings' Rest and Ruby Life Pools. Confirmed Season 2 keystone item levels: +2 through +3 pay 295 end-of-run and 305 in the vault, rising to 311 end-of-run and 318 in the vault at +10 and above. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.
Enchants
Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.
Gems
Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.
Embellishments
Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.
Utility, defensives, and movement
Your Priest toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.
Movement
Mass Dispel and Power Infusion are premier raid utility every roster wants.
Interface and macros
Use interface changes only when they expose a decision sooner: resources, procs, defensives, dispels, interrupts, and encounter assignments.
Written for patch 12.0.7. Patch 12.1 increased max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and made crowd-control diminishing returns reset after 20 seconds instead of 16, so defensive timing and crowd-control advice on this page is the most likely to have moved. What improves results
- Keep Prayer of Mending bouncing and never waste its second charge
- Pair Halo with Apotheosis - both gain from the combination, and Halo's Surge of Light procs heal for more
- Hold a capped Holy Word only for a known imminent event
- Save Divine Hymn and Salvation for scripted spikes
- Shadow Word: Death instantly frees a Polymorphed ally - any damage breaks the sheep, so a quick SW:D bails out a mis-sheeped or CC'd teammate
Common mistakes
- Sitting on Prayer of Mending or Holy Word charges
- Ignoring the Oracle versus Archon Surge of Light priority
- Saving big cooldowns too long
- Ignoring Prayer of Mending uptime
FAQ
3 quick answersWhich hero tree should I start with?
Oracle is the natural first choice if you want Prayer of Mending-driven passive healing. Archon is a strong alternative for Halo, Ultimate Serenity, and Prayer of Healing-focused throughput.
Which race is best?
Dracthyr is a strong practical choice for mobility and crowd control. Goblin is a mobility alternative for Horde and Void Elf for Alliance; racial output differences are small.
When should I use Surge of Light?
Oracle normally spends it on Flash Heal. Archon with Spiritwell spends it on Prayer of Healing, where the proc is especially valuable.
