What changed for this spec
Voidform now grants 3 uses of Void Volley instead of Void Volley having a cooldown during Voidform; the developers' notes say this is intended to leave more room in the rotation while giving you the chance to use it at its most opportune moment. New talent Shadeburst: Shadowy Apparitions that float towards your primary target explode, dealing Shadow damage to all enemies within 8 yards, with damage reduced beyond 5 targets. The developers' notes describe this added source of multi-target damage as reducing the spec's reliance on Psychic Link in AoE situations. Improved Voidform and Ancient Madness have been redesigned, and Phantom Menace has been removed. Idol of N'Zoth now generates 2 Insanity (was 4) at 50 stacks and 6 Insanity (was 12) at 100 stacks, which the notes attribute to balancing the Insanity economy. Tuning: all ability damage done increased by 8%, Void Volley damage reduced by 10%, Power Word: Shield absorb increased by 25%. For Archon, Focused Outburst has been redesigned and Resonant Energy slightly redesigned.
2 things on this page name abilities the patch changed
These are flagged, not corrected. Rewriting a priority list needs a source this page does not have, so what is shown is where the guide and the patch notes disagree.
- Void Volley (rotation) The notes change how the ability is used, not just its numbers: "Voidform now grants 3 uses of Void Volley instead of Void Volley having a cooldown during Voidform." The developers' notes add that they are "updating Void Volley to be a limited use ability that can be used a set number of times during Voidform which leaves more room in the rotation given you the chance to use it at its most opportune moment." Any rotation text describing it as a cooldown used during Voidform no longer matches.
- Void Volley (talents) Same functional change: "Voidform now grants 3 uses of Void Volley instead of Void Volley having a cooldown during Voidform." Talent text describing a cooldown-based Void Volley is out of date; the notes also state "Void Volley damage reduced by 10%" and that Improved Voidform now "grants 2 additional uses of Void Volley".

Not re-verified for Season 2. This ordering was checked for patch 12.0.7. Patch 12.1 raised max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and deliberately moved power out of cooldowns into steady-state damage, either of which can move secondary weights. Open question: no Season 2 sim source has been checked, so the order below is last season's and is shown unchanged rather than guessed at.
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Item Level / Intellect
- 2.Haste
- 3.Mastery
- 4.Critical Strike
- 5.Versatility
Voidweaver generally prefers Haste around 25-33% in single target and 25-35% in AoE, followed by Mastery. Archon single target can prefer Mastery before Haste, while its AoE profile returns to Haste first. These are targets, not hard caps: validate close items against your current talent build, target count, and trinkets.
Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.
Priority order is from patch 12.0.7 and has not been re-derived for 12.1. Individual lines naming an ability that 12.1 removed or redesigned are annotated above; lines that 12.1 only retuned are unchanged, because a damage number moving does not by itself reorder a priority list.
Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Maximize Shadow Word: Madness uptime: Insanity is Shadow's only resource and Shadow Word: Madness its spender. Never cap at 100 Insanity, and keep Madness running as long as possible for Mastery: Shadow Weaving damage.
- Keep cooldowns on cooldown: prioritize shorter-cooldown spells over longer ones so you never lose a use of an ability across the encounter.
- React to procs: Shadowy Insight and Mind Devourer need to be spent as they occur to avoid wasting casts.
- AoE plays almost identically to single target - you cleave off one priority target through Tentacle Slam and Psychic Link.
VoidweaverPlays around Void Torrent's Entropic Rift and Void Blast. The AoE list is the same as single target - cleave comes from Tentacle Slam and Psychic Link.
Single-target priority
- 1.Shadow Word: Pain - cast to maintain it
- 2.Vampiric Touch - maintain, either with Tentacle Slam or a hard cast
- 3.Voidform
- 4.Power Infusion
- 5.Shadow Word: Death - if the target has an absorb shield
- 6.Void Blast - if Shadow Word: Madness is active or Entropic Rift is about to expire
- 7.Shadow Word: Madness - spend Insanity if Madness is not active, about to fall off, you are about to cap, or Entropic Rift is active
- 8.Void Volley
- 9.Void Torrent - to activate Entropic Rift
- 10.Mind Blast
- 11.Shadow Word: Madness
- 12.Tentacle Slam - if there will be no additional targets to DoT and no upcoming movement
- 13.Shadow Word: Death - if the target is below 20% health
- 14.Mind Flay - interrupt it as soon as anything higher priority becomes available
AoE priority
- 1.Same list as single target - AoE cleaves off one priority target via Tentacle Slam and Psychic Link
- 2.Shadow Word: Pain - cast to maintain it
- 3.Vampiric Touch - maintain via Tentacle Slam or hard cast
- 4.Voidform
- 5.Power Infusion
- 6.Shadow Word: Death - if the target has an absorb shield
- 7.Void Blast - if Shadow Word: Madness is active or Entropic Rift is about to expire
- 8.Shadow Word: Madness - if not active, about to fall off, near Insanity cap, or Entropic Rift is active
- 9.Void Volley
- 10.Void Torrent - to activate Entropic Rift
- 11.Mind Blast
- 12.Shadow Word: Madness
- 13.Tentacle Slam - if no additional targets to DoT and no upcoming movement
- 14.Shadow Word: Death - if any target is below 20% health
- 15.Mind Flay - interrupt for anything higher priority

- 6.Cast Shadow Word: Madness.
- 7.Cast Void Torrent.

ArchonThe Halo-led alternative cadence. Halo slots in above Voidform, and Mind Flay: Insanity joins the priority while Madness is active.
Single-target priority

- 6.Void Volley
- 7.Shadow Word: Madness - spend Insanity if Madness is not active, about to fall off, or you are about to cap

- 2.Cast Shadow Word: Pain.
- 3.Cast Halo.
- 4.Cast Voidform.
- 5.Cast Power Infusion, use Light's Potential and any on-use trinkets.
- 6.Cast Void Volley.
Pre-combat checks
- Apply Shadowform - it must be active to do full damage with your spells.
- Cast Power Word: Fortitude to buff you and your party with Stamina.
Major cooldowns
Power Infusion
- With Twins of the Sun Priestess, Power Infusion also buffs an ally - pick a target who consistently gets high value from the Haste every 2 minutes, and adjust targets through the encounter if needed.
- Always prioritize your own value and damage over an ally's, get the maximum number of uses, and line it up with your other powerful cooldowns.
Opener and cooldown pacing
- Every opener has three goals: put the most important spells on cooldown, generate Insanity to start maintaining Shadow Word: Madness, and react to important procs in the first 10-15 seconds.
- When moving, cast Tentacle Slam, Shadow Word: Death, or Shadow Word: Pain to keep generating Insanity and dealing damage.
Import strings were built for patch 12.0.7 and have NOT been re-verified for 12.1. Nobody authoritative publishes import strings, so none was rewritten here rather than invented. Patch 12.1 moved or removed talents in several trees, so a string may import a build that no longer exists. Check the listed key talents against the 12.1 changes above before importing.

Editorial acquisition targets
Use these slot targets when planning drops and crafted pieces. The encounter explorer above remains the source for the exact gear worn by each ranked player.
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The rows below name Season 1 items at their Season 1 item levels and are accurate as that; they are not Season 2 recommendations. Season 2's raid is The Venomous Abyss (8 bosses, Nek'zali the Soulcoiler through Ula'tek). Confirmed Season 2 raid item levels run 279 (Raid Finder, first boss) to 344 (Mythic, last two bosses and Very Rare drops), with Normal 292-302, Heroic 305-315 and the Great Vault paying 292/305/318/334 by difficulty. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The dungeons named below are the Season 1 pool and are not in Season 2 rotation. Season 2 runs Altar of Fangs (new in 12.1), Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Temple of Sethraliss, Kings' Rest and Ruby Life Pools. Confirmed Season 2 keystone item levels: +2 through +3 pay 295 end-of-run and 305 in the vault, rising to 311 end-of-run and 318 in the vault at +10 and above. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.
Enchants
Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.
Gems
Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.
Embellishments
Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.
Utility, defensives, and movement
Your Priest toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.
Movement
Mass Dispel and Power Infusion are premier raid utility every roster wants.

/cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] SilenceWritten for patch 12.0.7. Patch 12.1 increased max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and made crowd-control diminishing returns reset after 20 seconds instead of 16, so defensive timing and crowd-control advice on this page is the most likely to have moved. What improves results
- Maintain Vampiric Touch; only maintain Shadow Word: Pain when your talent build calls for it
- Do not cap Insanity - Shadow Word: Madness is the spender
- Use Tentacle Slam before charges cap, unless a planned add wave needs those charges
- Align Power Infusion, potion, and on-use trinkets with Voidform
- Shadow Word: Death instantly frees a Polymorphed ally - any damage breaks the sheep, so a quick SW:D bails out a mis-sheeped or CC'd teammate
Common mistakes
- Following an old Devouring Plague or Shadow Crash rotation
- Letting Shadow Word: Madness fall off or capping Insanity
- Casting Void Torrent without planning its Entropic Rift window
- Overcapping Tentacle Slam charges
FAQ
3 quick answersWhich hero tree should I start with?
Start with Voidweaver for most raid fights and keys. Use Archon when Halo's cadence and multi-target profile are better for the specific encounter.
When should I cast Shadow Word: Madness?
Spend on it when it is not active, is about to expire, or you are about to cap Insanity. In three-target builds, apply it to a new target as resources allow.
Which races are best?
Racial damage differences are very small. For raid mobility, Goblin, Dracthyr, and Void Elf are practical choices; Night Elf or Dwarf bring valuable Mythic+ utility depending on the season.
